About Anisa Yalom, MD

Anisa M. Yalom, MD, is a board certified and fellowship-trained Hand and Wrist Surgeon. She performs reconstructive surgeries to restore the structure or improve patients’ fine motor skills after nerve, tendon and ligament injuries, fractures, and joint conditions like arthritis, birth defects, or traumatic injuries to their hands, wrist and forearms.

Dr. Yalom holds privileges at multiple hospitals throughout San Diego County to better serve her patients at the hospital that is most convenient for them. These include Scripps Encinitas, Scripps Memorial La Jolla, Scripps Mercy, Sharp Metro Memorial, Sharp Grossmont and Palomar Hospitals.

She is a graduate of David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where she earned her medical degree in 2008. In medical school she was recognized with the Dean’s Award for an Outstanding Thesis and the Award for Excellence in Surgery.

Dr. Yalom completed her internship in General Surgery at Harbor-UCLA in Torrance, California, where she was awarded the Intern of the Year award in 2009. She then went on to complete the rigorous General Surgery Residency at Harbor-UCLA in Torrance, CA in 2014.

Following her residency she was accepted into the combined Orthopedic and Plastics Hand Surgery Fellowship at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA where she was trained in the full range of orthopedic hand surgery as well as microsurgical techniques for composite free tissue transfer and limb salvage under the guidance of Dr. L. Scott Levin.

Throughout her career, Dr. Yalom has earned numerous awards and honors for her outstanding work. In 2014 she won the Excellence in Teaching with Humanism Award at UCLA in 2014. In 2019, she received the honor of being selected as a Young Leader for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Patients often note Dr. Yalom’s warmth, kindness, and attention to detail as well as her ability to communicate in four languages: English, Spanish, French, and German. She takes the time to listen to all of her patients’ concerns before strategizing a personalized plan of action to get the best possible outcome for their hand function and way of life. Her meticulous and careful surgical technique is reflected in the excellent outcomes that her patients enjoy.

At her practice, Dr. Yalom showcases her proficiency in diagnosing and treating various hand and wrist conditions, such as Dupuytren’s disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, and nerve damage. She also performs hand reconstructive surgery for hand and wrist fractures, ligament and tendon reconstruction and nerve transfers. 

When she is not seeing patients or performing surgery she enjoys surfing, open ocean swimming, sculpting and spending time outdoors with her husband and three small children.

Anisa Yalom, MD, is a fellowship-trained, dedicated hand surgeon, offering her expertise to patients aged 12 and older at her self-named practice in San Marcos, California. 

Dr. Yalom’s academic journey began with earning her bachelor’s degree at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She further honed her skills in the field of medicine, completing her postbaccalaureate premedical studies at Columbia University in New York City, New York.

Dr. Yalom continued her education, earning her medical degree from the prestigious David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)/Charles R. Drew University (CDU) in Los Angeles, California, where she was given the Dean’s Award for an outstanding thesis and the Award for Excellence in Surgery.

She went on to complete her internship (receiving the Intern of the Year award) and general surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California.

She then secured a spot in the esteemed hand surgery fellowship program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, receiving comprehensive training in hand surgery and advanced microsurgical techniques. Guided by the renowned Dr. L. Scott Levin, Dr. Yalom gained expertise in complex procedures like composite free tissue transfer and limb salvage.
